When Henchmen Becomes Disastrous

When Henchmen become Disastrous

“If you must get anything from him, you must pass through Mr Henchman”.

This is often how they describe some friends, family members, close associates, trusted aides or allies of some very influential persons in the society. These individuals, due to their privileged relationship with people of influence, or due to the level of trust they have earned, they soon become the henchmen of the person. While it is good for an individual to have some persons you can trust, it’s however disastrous when such individual doesn’t guard the possibility of being manipulated by his trusted allies.

I have observed that such unguarded manipulation by trusted allies and henchmen, is part of the reasons some leaders fail. Over time, these henchmen have mirrored the thought pattern of this leader, making it easy for them to take decisions on his behalf. On the flip side, their understanding of his thought pattern, also makes it easy for him to be kept in the dark, while they utilize his influence for their selfish gains and agendas.

How do they start? Firstly, they make themselves your decision vetting agents. They make you doubt every decision you make without their consent. Until it passes through them, it is questionable.

Secondly, they create distrust between you and every other person except themselves. Once you commit something to someone else, they voluntarily make themselves auditors and monitoring spirits. They stalk the person and make you see every little mistake the person make. Mistakes that you would have normally ignore, will become a big issue.

Thirdly, they make you interpret they being around you as loyalty. Little do you know that it is a calculated attempt to scare others away. Since they are always around you, they automatically become your closest counsellors, and confidant. Any other counsel coming outside their clique is hotly contested.

Fourthly, they will never be able to work with other members of your friends or associates as a team. This is because they don’t want to create an avenue for you to start trusting the judgment of others. If the leader imposes team members on them, they will create a competitive atmosphere in the team, thereby ruining the overall aim of the team. Or better still, they will find a loophole to discredit a member of the team that is gradually earning your trust.

As a leader, once you discover this, expand your network of friends and associates, take your ears and heart from these henchmen, and start to see things for yourself.

I must warn you that it is not always easy to find out, as doubting someone you have trusted for over a decade is not a simple feat. It is a lot easier to prevent it than to be saved from it.

Remember Haman and the Persia and Medes King Ahasuerus.
Remember Goodluck Jonathan and the cabal.
Buhari and his Daura gang are currently on a rampage.

To be forewarned is to be forearm.

Tag all emerging leaders.

Do enjoy your evening.
