LEADERSHIP IN ADVERSITY: A TALE OF ENGR. CHRIS OGIEMWONYI
The world has been thrown into serious crisis owing to the outbreak of #Corona virus (also known as #COVID – 19) in almost all the nations of the earth with attendant deaths and devastating consequences. The disease which is described as the 6th recorded highest pandemic has left the once beautiful world in fear, bitterness and sorrow. Many people are now persuaded that the end of time has come. God save our souls!
However, in the midst of all the despairs, sorrows and fears is a spark of hope arising from the fact that the spread of the pandemic Corona virus can be curtailed by the use of hand sanitizers, wearing of facemasks and washing of hands with soap on a running water.
Considering the financial position of many people with particular reference to Edo State, how many people can afford the aforementioned items, a place where the vast majority of the people live on less than one Dollar a day?
With a government that is not providing those items to the people, except the usual order of “stay at home”, where lies the fate of our people confronted by the ravaging pandemic Corona virus?
No doubt, this is a critical time. We are faced with a great adversity. We are confronted by a monstrous pandemic that threatens our existence as mortals.
In the light of this great adversity, the ever green aphorism which says “in the days of adversity, true leadership is tested”, re- echoes in my mind and brings to the front burner persons interested in occupying the exalted office of Edo State Governor come November 12th, 2020, especially on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While all those persons aspiring to become the Governor of Edo State are well-known political gladiators in their respective rights predicated on their fought battles in the past, it is regrettable that EXCEPT just one of them, NONE is involved in the fight against the monstrous Corona virus in Edo State. Their only engagement in this fight against the dreaded virus is mere colourful advertorials with their campaign #photographs in social media platforms by their #hirelings, telling people to “stay at home and stay safe”. What a pity!
As we speak, only ENGR. CHRIS OGIEMWONYI has taken the bull by the horn by providing hand sanitizers, facemasks and other essential medical and food items to Edo people in the three Senatorial Districts of our State.
For me, that is the hallmark of leadership. ENGR. CHRIS OGIEMWONYI has demonstrated that he is not just a manager of men, but a true leader. Management is about tasks, but leadership is about people. Leadership requires the ability to keep people inspired and instil in them hope, despite the occurrence of unexpected setbacks. A true leader empathizes with his people. From his breast flows unending milk of human kindness and this enables him to make selfless sacrifices for his people, even at the risk of his life.
THAT IS THE tale OF ENGR. CHRIS OGIEMWONYI, a man with a #benevolent and #sacrificial spirit!
